European Union Recognizes Vallegarcía Wine Estate with PDO Status

Great news for certain winemakers in Spain: the European Commission has officially improved the inclusion of Vallegarcía in its register of Protected Designations of

Origin (PDO).

Vallegarcía includes wines in Ciudad Real province made from local grapes, and this long-waited approval comes about two decades after vineyards were first planted on the Vallegarcía estate in Toledo, back in 1999. The area is home to some of the Peninsula’s oldest soils and, interestingly, there was absolutely no tradition of winemaking in the area until the winery was established in June of that year.

According to the winery’s technical director, this recognition “pushes us to strive for excellence and to continue supporting the development of the rural environment in the Montes de Toledo region, where the Pago de Vallegarcía enclave is,” according to harpers.co.uk. Inclusion in the EC’s register also reflects the pioneering work done in the area and the creation of truly unique wines. There are now 13 PDO estate wines in Spain.

The European Union’s quality schemes aim to protect the names of specific products to promote their unique characteristics, linked to their geographical origin as well as traditional know-how. Protected Designations of Origin, for example, are assigned to those product names that have the strongest ties to their place of origin, or the place that they are produced. In this case, the PDO protects the vineyard and the soil.Pago de Vallegarcía is located near Cabañeros National Park, in Montes de Toledo. The vineyard’s soils have tremendous potential to yield wines that are fresh and complex, and the surrounding area is home to highly valuable flora and fauna.
