Spain’s Murcia region has some unexpected ties to multinational Coca-Cola, thanks to a new partnership. The US company, which has become a leader in
Honest’s founder, Seth Goldman, recently traveled to the Spanish region to better understand one of the main ingredients in its tea. Goldman sat for interviews with several farmers ang knew their farming methods. He will be working with Hacienda del Pino, in El Algar, Cartagena, and Finca Carmina, in Santomera. The former is home to over 400 hectares of organic lemons, the largest in Spain. The latter owns just 20 hectares, and its goal is to grow different varieties of autochthonous lemons using technology and with a commitment to sustainability.
According to laverdad.es, Murcia’s position as “the top supplier of organic lemon juice” for a US giant like Coca-Cola is a major achievement, especially since the market is so competitive. The juice will be used in the company’s tea with lemon and lemonades.
Honest has been wildly successful in the US, with customers increasing from 15,000 in 2007 to over 140,000 at the moment. It now has its sights set on Europe.
