Spanish Fruit and Vegetable Exports Continue Their Upward Trend

Spanish Fruit and Vegetable Exports

Good news for Spanish fruit and vegetable producers: exports are on the rise. According to recent data from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism,

food, beverages and tobacco remain the second-largest group of exports in the country, accounting for 17% of the total.

Within that segment, fruits, vegetables and legumes are the main export, amounting to 3.405 billion euros, which represents growth of 5.5% in year-on-year terms. Comparing February 2018 with February 2017 specifically, fruit and vegetable exports expanded by 8% in volume and 5% in value.

Data from Spain’s Customs and Tax Agency suggests that vegetable sales increased by 7% in volume and 22% in value, while fruit exports rose by 9% in volume and declined by 4% in value. As for the most popular products outside Spain, international consumers love Spanish tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, citrus fruit, and strawberries.

In second place, behind fruits and veggies, meat products are the next most exported product, with exports reaching 1.132 billion euros and reflecting growth of 2.9%. Although more ambiguous, the “other foods” segment saw notable 11.5% growth in exports, which were valued at 964.5 million euros. Other segments with positive growth include oils and also fish products. As for beverages, exports totaled 625 million euros, up 3.1% year-on-year.
